A caring group of Murray City citizens dedicated to preserving the historic structure of the Railroad depot formed a non profit organization named the Murray City Depot Improvement Committee and with limited resources, began the restoration process. They attended a year of grant writing classes which taught them to apply for their first 600 dollar grant and with 500 additional dollars in donations from cemetery books by Sandra Quinn, began the process of funding the project. The members of this group were Larry Mitchell,*Dorothy Simon, *Rita Hanna, and *Junior Keaton. (* = deceased and dearly missed).

With the help of the Murray City Alumni, families and friends, additional funds were raised which continued the restoration; helped with a purchase of a caboose; installation of railroad tracks built by Larry Mitchell, Richard Buchanan, and Eugene Duncan; donation of an engine by Bill Sweazy of Florida; funds for movement of the caboose and engine over railroad lines and highways to the MC depot with assistance of the Nelsonville Hocking Valley Railway and All Crane; a shelter house built with concrete floors and dedicated in memory of long time Sunday Creek land lease manager Phil Ong; a memorial created to the Murray City Coal Miners / Military Veterans; and all work was completed under supervisor Larry Mitchell.

A man, Larry Mitchell, and his friends vision of the future has been completed over a period of eight years time and the beautiful Murray City Depot Park will allow visitors to glimpse into the lives of the Murray City Coal Miners for many generations to come.
